It was 3:04 a.m. when she sat up on the cot and screamed, feeling as if she was being burned alive. It woke all the other cellmates up with a start and caused quite a fuss. She explained it was nightmares and of course, her cranky roommates only wanted to kill her more. Sitting with her back against the wall, she stared into space as she remembered this dream. It was unlike the others. It started out peaceful, a woman running through a forest. The bonnet holding her hair secured had flown off and her dark hair flowed behind her in the breeze. She laughed and looked behind her to see if someone was following her. There he was, a huge smile on his face as he chased her through the brush of the forest. His laugh joined hers in a joyous melody. As he moved closer to her, he reached out with his arms and grabbed her, pulling her back into him. She laughed harder, and they fell to the ground, her hair splayed out around her. He hovered above her and brushed a tendril of hair from her face. After staring into one another’s eyes for a moment, he kissed her deeply. Then her legs felt hot, her wrists burned, and she was now tied to a post, watching the man she loved look on as she was put to death. And then she woke up screaming.

“I know you’re trying to tell me something,” she whispered to no one, in her mind talking to her Aunt Tilly. “I’m going to figure it out.” Pulling her knees up to her chest, she closed her eyes and tried to rest as much as possible.

The next morning, Lexie felt like a zombie. With very little sleep, no shower and severely missing her own toothbrush, she was a mess. Brushing her teeth in jail made her still feel dirty. She couldn’t wait to be home. She was shackled with the others and brought via van to the courthouse for an arraignment.

“Stacy!” she shouted when she saw Stacy enter the opposite end of the courtroom. Stacy looked withdrawn, and she didn’t smile. She looked as if she’d been crying, and it made Lexie’s heart hurt. The doors opened and she saw Ivan walk in, a bit unsteady and he looked unlike himself. Lexie was led to the table with Stacy and Ivan. He looked at her and the pained eyes he gave her were the replica of the man in her dreams. Before she could utter a word, the judge entered and everyone rose to their feet. Stacy appeared angry at her and barely looked her way.

“Good morning, your honor.”

“Good morning,” Judge Broussard replied. “Counselors, please state your appearances.”

There was a man opposite of Ivan, representing the state. “Sam Dauphine for the state, your honor.”

“Ivan Walters, criminal defense for Stacy Moreau and Lexie Cohle.”

“This is an arraignment as follows, for both Ms. Moreau and Ms. Cohle.” The judge placed her glasses on and began to read a docket.
